Rustic and Traditional Greek Salad

01/13/2017 By CTWellness

A Rustic and Traditional Greek Salad is healthy, simple, and full of flavor. A perfect salad to go with any dish! Satisfying enough to serve on its own.

This is a go to salad in our house. We love mediterranean flavors! With a little one in the house I’m always looking for recipes and meals that are very quick to make. Some days, when it comes to dinner, you just don’t want to think. You know what I mean? This is perfect for those days.  So far I haven’t found anything it doesn’t pair well with.

What's the one ingredient that you normally see in a salad that you DON'T see in a real Greek Salad? Rustic and Authentic Greek Salad.

Most of the Greek salads you see in restaurants are “Americanized” because they have lettuce. However, if you were to go to Greece, chances are lettuce will be one ingredient that won’t be on your plate.

To Make a Traditional Greek Salad

You will need

  • 1 Cucumber
  • 4 Tomatoes
  • 1 Bell Pepper, Any Color
  • 1/2 Pound Block Of Feta Cheese
  • Kalamata Olives
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • dill or oregano (optional)

Rustic and Authentic Greek Salad

Instructions:

  1. To make the salad, chop the Cucumber, tomatoes, and bell pepper in a chunky sort of fashion. 1-2 inch chunks. I don’t care for large bits of raw onion in my life, so I do those in more of a dice or slice. You’ll find it either way in Greece. Add everything into a large salad bowl
  2. Add the kalamata olives and the feta cheese last. They are very salty and will cause the veggies to sweat out their water in a short amount of time. Also, because these are so salty, this takes the place of needing to add salt to a dressing or the salad Crumble or cut the feta into chunks
  3. Lastly dress the salad with just a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, and a pinch of fresh oregano, or dill (optional)

And there you have it! An authentic and very healthy rustic greek salad.

Serve fresh and cold.  If you want to make this ahead of time (this is a great one to do that with), just leave the olives and feta separate until you are ready to serve.  This way the veggies won’t get soggy with the salts in the brine.

I know a lot of people who shy away from this type of salad, but I totally love Greek salad! Its flavors are just so interesting. Thanks for sharing it over at Food Friday. Hope to see you again! :)

I do too but I love it. Maybe it's the brine they use for olives and feta....who knows. They are missing out
