Ok, I know that every time you get on the internet you see some article for the next up and coming, most awesome superfood on the market. Well, flaxseeds aren’t exactly new….but, I know with so many superfoods to choose from, it can get a little confusing. Here’s 8 amazing health benefits of flaxseed and why you should eat them every day!
8 Amazing Health Benefits of Flaxseed
One of the things I LOVE about flaxseeds is how versatile they are.
Did you know….
Flaxseed can be used as an egg substitute in baking?? You can make “flax eggs” and they perform the same job as eggs as a binding agent for muffins and breads and many other baked things. With egg allergies on the rise, this is the perfect solution. PLUS they are gluten free!
They can help with diabetes and hypoglycemia by stabilizing blood sugar. Some studies have even shown that when added to a bread recipe (for example), the glycemic levels of the bread lower significantly in the body than if that same bread were consumed without flax seeds. How incredible is that?
They can help protect you from cancer…..especially breast cancer! This is due to their high levels of lignans. In fact, they are the highest known source of lignans. Flax seeds contain seven times the amount of the next highest source, sesame seeds.
What else can I use flaxseeds in?
The possibilities are endless when it comes to flax seeds. Not only can they be blended in smoothies; they can also be added to pancakes, parfaits, and more. My personal favorite use for them is to add them to my granola.
Not only are they a binder, but also a thickener making them perfect for smoothies. You can use less ice and sub in some flax seeds. They have a slightly nutty flavor so if you’re a fan of adding nut butters in your smoothie, flaxseeds are a perfect addition….not to mention a serious nutritional boost!

8 Amazing Health Benefits of Flaxseed
Flax seeds are touted as a major power food, and for good reason.
- Flax seeds can help with weight management due to their high fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids content. One tablespoon contains 3 grams of fiber!!
- Can help combat diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar.
- Can help protect you from cancer thanks to high levels of lignans – breast cancer in particular.
- Phytochemicals in flaxseeds and help balance female hormones
- High Omega 3 content also reduces inflammation in the body, which can help with arthritis, headaches, asthma, and more.
- Rich in antioxidant levels which detoxify cells.
- The ALA fat content is great for hair, skin, and nails.
- Flaxseeds can help with the symptoms of dry eye syndrome
A note of caution: Because flaxseeds can have an effect on female hormones, it is generally not recommended for women that are pregnant or breastfeeding to consume flaxseeds. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your doctor first to see if these are safe for you and to find the correct amount.
How do I need to prepare them?
There is a bit of a debate happening in the nutritional world about whether flaxseeds are best eaten ground up or whole.
Fiber is the main concern in this debate. Flax seeds contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. When ground, both able to be digested. When whole, only the insoluble fiber is available.
So, in short, you can eat them whole or ground and still get benefits. But whenever possible, try to eat them ground. You can buy them pre-ground at many grocery stores, but like so many foods, the fresher the better.
What about Flax Oil?
Flax oil is extracted from flax seeds and contains beneficial nutrients that:
- Help maintain healthy cholesterol levels
- Aid in breast tissue health
- Support the prostate gland
- Stimulate the immune system
I recommend Flax Seed Oil with Linigans from Nature’s Sunshine (ask me how you can save 33%!)
The health benefits of flaxseed are no to be missed! Next time you visit the grocery store don’t forget to pick up a package of flaxseeds, and watch your health improve day by day.
