Everyone nowadays is looking for ways to keep their house cleaner and stay healthy in more natural ways. One of the biggest offenders of uncleanliness in the home is your outdoor shoes. There are many reasons why you should never wear shoes at home.
Now, I know a lot of you will say that a little dirt never hurt anyone. Or there’s my favorite “God made dirt and dirt don’t hurt” and for the most part, you’d be right. a little dirt is actually good for developing little immune systems. But, there’s more than just dirt on those shoes.
Why You Should NEVER Wear Shoes At Home
1. E. Coli.
Every day we step in viruses and bacteria. This happens through a walk through public restrooms, stepping in animal excrement (which you do whether you think you do or not), bird droppings, etc. Everyone has E. Coli on their shoes.
This being said, how likely is it that you can actually contract and get sick from E. Coli, from your shoes? Not terribly likely, but if you spend quality time on your floor, for instance with your small children, or playing with pets, you can contract it through open cuts on the skin or if you accidentally lick your fingers for some reason and forget to wash your hands first. Little munchkins do this all the time so, for them, it could be a lot more likely.
2. Your feet are stronger without shoes.
Countless studies have shown that it is better for the muscles, particularly the arches, if you don’t wear shoes. This rather lengthy article in NY magazine can tell you all about it, complete with diagrams…or you can take my word for it.
3. Less dirt in the house.
Any mom out there will shout “Hallelujah” for this one. Your kids play outside, in sandboxes and mud…or that puddle you tried to miss but didn’t quite make it, and then you wear those shoes in the house. Let’s all say it together…..”Ew yuck!” Why clean more than you have to?
The form you have selected does not exist.
4. Reflexology
Many cultures have a long history of removing shoes before entering a home. All the Asian countries practice this and quite a few other countries as well. One of the reasons is because it is better for your health. Reflexology originated in these regions and when you are barefoot, the pressure points in the feet are stimulated and have lasting positive effects on all the organs and systems in the body.
5. Less Chemicals in your home
This one is actually a double whammy. Not only do you track in dirt and bacteria but also harmful toxic chemicals from the great outdoors. Chemicals such as tar, mold, or strong pesticides. One study even found that lawn chemicals such as weed killer can be tracked in up to a week after being sprayed outside.
Also, logic would show that if you don’t have as much dirt, bacteria, and any other yucky stuff you don’t want coming in, then you won’t need to clean as much which would involve more chemicals….that is if you haven’t been using non toxic household cleaners.
So as you can see, wearing shoes in your house has both a negative health impact and a major ick factor. Follow these reasons to never wear shoes at home and I can promise your home will be cleaner and your health will improve a bit.
